UNL Extension Offers Herd Management Guidance as Great Plains Grazing Season Begins

University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension is helping ranchers navigate grazing and herd management strategies.

LINCOLN, Neb. (RFD News) — Summer grazing season is underway across the Great Plains, and continued drought concerns and pasture challenges have many producers enhancing their cow-calf management strategies.

Kacie McCarthy with the University of Nebraska–Lincoln joined us on Tuesday’s Market Day Report to discuss resources available to producers.

In her conversation with RFD News, McCarthy said forage availability, pasture conditions and overall herd performance remain key considerations as producers move through the summer and into breeding season.

With drought concerns lingering across parts of the region, McCarthy said producers may need to evaluate stocking rates, supplementation strategies and grazing plans to match changing conditions.

She noted that Nebraska Extension will continue to provide research-based information and practical tools to help ranchers navigate management decisions.

McCarthy also highlighted the upcoming Nebraska Grazing Conference, scheduled for Aug. 4-5 in Kearney.

This year’s event will focus on grazing management topics including regenerative practices, virtual fencing technology and producer perspectives from Nebraska and beyond.
