Georgia Researchers Harness Robotics and AI Tech to Target Weeds and Track Crop Pests

The University of Georgia is developing new ag technology with robotics and AI to identify pigweed and remotely track insect populations in crop production.

TIFTON, Ga. (Farm Monitor) — Researchers at the University of Georgia are using artificial intelligence and other technology to help manage weeds and insects.

UGA professional engineer Dr. Glen Rains developed a robotic rover that uses cameras and AI to identify herbicide-resistant pigweed, then uses lasers or mechanical methods to remove it.

Rains and his team have also developed a remote insect trap that photographs insects and sends the images online, allowing researchers to monitor and identify them remotely.
