Virginia Farmers Feel the Growing Pains of Expanding Communities

Producers say traffic, higher costs and development are reshaping life on the farm.

JAMESTOWN, Va. (RFD News) — Preserving farmland remains an ongoing challenge as communities continue to grow, but Virginia farmers say maintaining strong connections with the people they serve is just as important.

At M.O. Smith & Sons Dairy, recognized as one of America’s oldest continuously operated farms, generations have worked the land while sharing agriculture’s story with local schools and colleges.

Nearby, Green Swamp Farm owner Bruce Abbott said growing traffic, rising input costs and development have created new challenges for agriculture. Despite those obstacles, he said his passion for farming remains as strong as ever.
